After the 18th amendment, Climate Change has become a provincial subject. To streamline climate action and to improve climate governance at the provincial level, the Climate Change Cell was established at the Planning and Development Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

VISION

"Empowering Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to thrive through the holistic integration of Climate Sensitive Planning, robust Climate Finance, and effective Climate Governance, ensuring sustainable development, resilience, and prosperity for present and future generations."

Objectives

  • To improve Climate Governance at the provincial level.
  • To provide policy inputs on various interventions at all levels of the government.
  • To act as a core provincial coordination point for climate action.
  • To harness the international climate financing opportunities and carbon markets for the province.
  • To mainstream climate change into planning and process.
  • To act as an information and learning hub, building the capacity of relevant stakeholders at the provincial level.

Activities

  • Training and Capacity Building of the relevant provincial stakeholders
  • Green Climate Fund Accreditation for the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
  • Incorporation of Climate Change into Planning Cycle
  • Liaison between the provincial government and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination
  • Management of local, inter-provincial, and donor coordination group
  • Inter Provincial Climate Change exposure Visits
MEAs – Multi Environment Agreements

Pakistan is a signatory to various Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)/conventions/protocols and has ratified all of them. Consequently, it is mandatory for the state to ensure the implementation of the agreements that have been endorsed. The international environmental instruments (conventions/ protocols) may be divided into five broad categories:
