Meeting on The Master Planning and Delimitation of Cities in KP

A meeting was held in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on master planning and delimitation of cities. The meeting was attended by Urban Policy and Planning Unit, GIS Cell, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Delimitation Authority, BOS, Board of Revenue officials, Chief Economist P&D and officers of various departments. The meeting made various suggestions on master planning of cities keeping in view the needs of future population growth in cities. The meeting approved all the departments to work together to determine the specific boundaries of the cities, after which the master planning of the cities will be done.

Projects Worth PKR 75.19 Billion Approved By 14th PDWP

Peshawar, 4th January 2021: A total of 27 schemes have been approved at an estimated cost of PKR 75.19 billion by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the 14th meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP). The Additional Chief Secretary, Shakil Qadir Khan, presided over the meeting which deliberated and approved schemes pertaining to different sectors including Health, Education, Multi-Sector Development, Roads, Agriculture, Water, Social Welfare, Relief & Rehabilitation, Urban Development, Population Welfare, Tourism & Sports.
The approved projects from today’s PDWP include construction of bus terminals, beautification in selected urban arears, construction of slaughter houses, solar based tube-wells in District South Waziristan. The Phase II of the Peshawar Uplift Programme was also approved that includes construction of roads, streets and drains at Karkhano Market, Peshawar. The rehabilitation and improvement of Canal Patrol Road along Warsak Canal has also been approved that will improve the connectivity between Hayatabad and Northern Bypass.
The accelerated development of the Merged Areas is a top priority of the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and several initiatives proposed under the Accelerated Implementation Programme have also been approved by the PDWP forum. Some of these AIP projects include low-cost water supply schemes in the Merged Areas, rural approach roads in all the Merged Districts, street pavement and construction of drains in different Districts/Subdivisions of the Merged Areas. Under the economic revitalization initiative for North Waziristan, the Phase II of compensation for lost businesses has been approved at a cost of PKR 6.63 billion.
Other notable projects that were approved following different rounds of discussions include rehabilitation of drainage systems, flood protection works, construction of bridges and installation of tube wells in the 3 tehsils of District Nowshera, including Pabbi, Jehangira and Nowshera. Similarly, extension of irrigation scheme in Tehsil Balambat of Dir Lower and construction of flood protection wall at downstream of Kochi Bridge in Lower Kurram have also been approved. Phase II of the Strengthening TB Control Programme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will also be launched soon.
Establishment of 200 family welfare centers in the province, reopening of functional community schools in different areas and launching a sports talent identification and grooming activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been added to the approved projects portfolio. Infrastructure development projects including water supply schemes in Kulachi, Daraband, Kural, Chekhan and Zandani areas of Dera Ismail Khan and feasibility study of the Khandia Road in Upper Kohistan also made the approved projects list.

Steering Committee Meeting of the Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project

The first meeting of the Steering Committee of the Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project was held under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shakeel Qadir Khan at the Planning and Development Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Officials and a representative of the World Bank attended. The total cost of the Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project is Rs. 30 billion while the duration of the project is 6 years. PC-1 of the project has been approved. Under the project, work will be done to improve agriculture and make the irrigation system efficient in all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the integrated districts. Under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project, Rs. 20 billion has been earmarked for the improvement of community irrigation system, Rs. 5 billion for use of modern technology for improvement of water use system and Rs. 1.7 billion for training and research. The steering committee meeting at the Planning and Development Department approved a work plan of Rs 4.9 billion for the first year of the project, under which 2,110 community irrigation projects across the province were improved in the first year, covering an area of ??600 acres. Installation of efficiency irrigation system, construction of 500 ponds and water reservoirs, 50 laser land levellers will be installed to prepare agricultural lands for cultivation with the help of laser land leveling technology, training of farmers in the first year and enhancing their farming capacity. Work will also be done on it. Training workshops for farmers and various programs have also been set up to enhance the professionalism of the Agriculture Department personnel. The meeting approved the District Rate Assessment Committee at the district level for the project, which will ensure transparency in the procurement and prices of agricultural implements and other machinery. The project will revolutionize the agricultural system in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, increase agricultural production and significantly increase the capacity of farmers – barren land will be cultivable and people will have access to adequate, safe and nutritious affordable food.

KP Government Aims to Empower Youth in Newly Merged Areas

The Directorate of Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has launched PKR 3 Billion project for the youth of Merged Districts. Project Steering Committee Meeting of ‘Youth Development Package & Establishment of Youth Facilities’ in Merged Areas held under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shakeel Qadir Khan. The meeting was attended by Secretary Sports, Director Youth Affairs, Chief PP&H section P&DD, Officials from Education Department and Deputy Commissioners of Merged Districts. The meeting approved project workplan for the year 2020-21. The meeting was informed that the project total worth is PKR 3 Billion and the duration of project is 2 years. The KP government is going to set up 7 jawan markaz (youth centers) in all newly merged districts under the project. It will encourage tribal youth to participate in healthy recreational activities. Other activities reflected under Youth Development Package include Talent Hunt, Promotions and Exposure Programs worth PKR 560 Million, Capacity Building & Awareness Programs worth PKR 540 Million, Special Youth Development Initiatives worth PKR 300 Million, Youth Endowment Funds worth PKR 229 Million. The tribal youth could play a vibrant and active role in the progress and prosperity of the nation if proper opportunities are provided. Various projects were being launched in merged areas in line with accelerated implementation programme for socioeconomic empowerment of youth. Youth Development Package and Establishment of Youth Facilities would bring the tribal youth at par with rest of the country.

First meeting of Provincial Advisory Committee on SDGs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

First meeting of Provincial Advisory Committee on SDGs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was convened under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shakeel Qadir Khan.
All Administrative Secretaries of the province, Chief SDGs-Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives and representatives of UNDP attended the meeting. The chair briefed the meeting about the aim and objectives of the meeting and the Advisory Committee. Director General-Sustainable Development Unit, P&D Department presented brief overview of the Advisory Committee. The proceedings of the meeting revolved around four (4) agenda items i.e. Approval of Provincial SDGs Framework, Approval of Supplementary Annexure for PC-I, Approval of recommendations of SDGs Unit with regard to simplifying Government’s approval processes to improve project management and Approval of District SDGs Scorecard.
The SDG Support Unit made detailed presentation on the agenda items. The Committee appreciated the efforts of the Unit in making the SDGs localization process more viable and visible in the province. After detailed deliberation the forum approved all agenda items and decided that Provincial SDGs Framework shall be presented to the Provincial Cabinet for approval; PC-1 Checklist shall be made Supplementary Annexure with PC-1 and the checklist shall be shared with Resource Center and uploaded on PFMS; Planning Cells shall be capacitated and engaged to integrate SDGs in planning process; all departments shall prepare their sectorial polices in line with SDGs targets set out in the framework; District SDGs Scorecard shall be published in form of a catalogue and its spectrum shall be broadened and that all departments shall use the catalogue as base for future planning and resource allocation.

Mid-Year Review Meeting on The ADP For The Financial Year 2020-21

Under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shakeel Qadir Khan, a mid-year review meeting on the annual development program for the financial year 21-2020 was held in the Planning and Development Department. The meeting was attended by Secretary P&D, Chief Economist, Coordination Section, Resource Center. M&E Directorate, International Development Section, Representatives of Finance Department, Secretaries of concerned departments, and Section Chiefs. On  the first day of the meeting the performance of departments was reviewed in detail  which included ongoing funds for development projects of departments, progress on projects and other aspects including PC-1 status. Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be briefed on the mid-year performance of the departments next week.

Meeting on the Improvement of Agriculture Commodity Statistics

A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the Department of Planning and Development to make the data and statistics related to agricultural commodities transparent and to address the shortcomings in it. The meeting was attended by officials from various departments including Secretary Agriculture, Secretary Irrigation, Chief Economist P&D, PMRU, Industries, Board of Revenue.
